Dall’alleanza con la Germania alla non belligeranza, alla dichiarazione di guerra fino alla sconfitta delle truppe dell’Asse in Africa, questo diario racconta gli anni più combattuti di Mussolini: dal suo massimo consenso, attribuitogli dopo la Conferenza di Monaco del ’38 e nella quale fu definito “il salvatore della pace”, alla sua inevitabile sconfitta militare e politica. Da questo diario, la figura del duce, esce sfregiata: “Hai mai visto l’agnello diventare lupo? La razza italiana è una razza di pecore. Non bastano 18 anni per trasformarla. Ce ne vogliono centottanta o forse centottanta secoli”. E ancora: “Il popolo italiano bisogna tenerlo inquadrato e in uniforme dalla mattina alla sera. E ci vuole bastone, bastone, bastone…”.

Nella seduta del Gran Consiglio del fascismo del 25 luglio del 1943, Galeazzo Ciano vota la mozione del giorno Grandi, che porta all’arresto di Mussolini e alla fine del regime. Pochi mesi dopo, il 19 ottobre 1943, Ciano viene arrestato a Verona dalle SS e rinchiuso nel carcere degli Scalzi, con l’accusa di alto tradimento. Viene condannato a morte e fucilato all’alba dell’11 gennaio 1944. La moglie, Edda, tentò disperatamente fino all’ultimo di salvargli la vita, cercando di barattare la vita dell’ex ministro degli Esteri coi suoi diari, i quali riportavano i tanti tradimenti tedeschi nei confronti degli italiani. Ma tutto fu inutile. Al giudice Vecchini che gli chiedeva se era il caso di condannare a morte Ciano, nonostante fosse suo genero, Mussolini rispose con voce ferma: “Fa’ il tuo dovere”.
